The First Commandment (Part 2)

August 26, 2007

DUTIES REQUIRED IN THE FIRST COMMANDMENT

The duty to know and acknowledge God to be the only true God:

‘As for you, my sons Soloman, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever’ (1 Chron. 28:9; See also 2 Kings 20:3; 2 Chron. 15:2; Deut. 31:17)

Are there any among the idols of the nations that can cause rain?
Or Can the heavens give showers?
Are You not He, O LORD our God?
Therefore we will wait for You,
Since You have made all these (Jer. 14:22).

The duty to worship God:

Oh come, let us worship and bow down:
Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.
For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture;
Abd the sheep of His hand (Psa. 95:6-7)

The duty to glorify God:

Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name;
Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness (Psa.29:2)

The duty to think about God:

Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another,
And the Lord listened and heard them;
So a book of remembrance was written before Him
For those who fear the LORD
And hwo meditate on His name (Mal. 3:16).

The duty to meditate of God:

When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches (Psa. 63:6).
(See also Psa. 42:8)

The duty to remember God:

Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth,
Before the difficult days come,
And the years draw near when you say,
‘I have no pleasure in them’ (Eccles. 12:1).”
